It’s no secret to the people who have spent any time around me know that Monopoly is my game. I’m a ruthless player and will form alliances and break them just as quickly if it means I’m going to win the game. I have Monopoly Here & Now downloaded to my cell phone and have run my batteries dead many times playing it. I love the game, I love winning, and I love being somewhat known for it.

So why wouldn’t I go to a college that’s known for it too?

If you ever got the urge to learn more about the game Monopoly, you might end up reading the facts at Monopoly Collector. And if you did happen to see that page, you might take notice to the section on Mammoth Boards. Under this you’d see Juniata College listed as one of the largest games of Monopoly ever played. The board was laid out on the sidewalks of the quad, and dice were thrown from the third story fire escape of the Cloister dormitory. This was Juniata proving that they knew how to play a wicked game of Monopoly… It was also 20 years ago.

On April 21, exactly 20 years after that record setting day here at sunny old Juniata College, we banded together once again to prove just how good we were at the game. But the ideas of yesteryear were not enough. It had to be bigger. Turns out the project ended up leaving four major campus/city streets closed for the day, several parking spaces occupied, including the prime visitor parking lot which was dubbed “Free Parking”. Each class got a life-sized game piece, and rolled life-size dice to take their turns.

An entire Saturday was spent playing, but sadly I wasn’t around to take part in it. I’m not sure which team won, but I know that most of my friends participated in it. I’m honestly guessing that the team which won is the one who had the most accounting/business majors on their team. So it’s most likely the seniors…

At least it wasn’t all to be just a big game. Over the weekend our school raised over $13,000 for Relay for Life. It’s really great, but now I’ll have to wait another 20 years to be able to play again. I’ll come back as a 40-year-old alumnus and play Monopoly with all the young whipper-snappers.

  1. If you were such a Monopolite, how could you have been not in the game?

    And I would pwn you.

  2. That sounds like it would be so much fun! Too bad all we’re known for is our sororities…

    We will see…

I wasn’t there because I had to get my hair done. It was either play Monopoly and go insane because I couldn’t stand my hair anymore, or get my hair done and move some things back home… I choose hair and moving out any day… Some things just override my love for Monopoly

  4. I frequently play at games.atari.com. And I rock. So I propose a Dead End game or tournament or some such thing. A champion MUST be declared!
