I have been posting on LiveJournal since March 2002. Five years. In Interweb years, that is like a century.
I am not leaving LJ, but I am getting my stuff backed up with all possible speed.
As many of you probably know, a group calling itself Warriors of Innocence (don’t visit their site - it is rife with spyware) did some Google searching for LJs that listed rape and pedophilia as an interest and then complained to LJ parent company 6 Apart. BAM! No warning, 6 Apart swept in and wiped out all of the groups that listed these as interests.
Good, right?
Well, no, because they didn’t bother to discriminate between journals that listed this as an interest. For example, a community focused on discussing Nabakov’s Lolita was deleted along with some sites that were pretty icky.
They also managed to wipe out a bunch of fan fiction communities - basically saying “if you write something about Hermione and Ron Weasly getting it on, you are as bad as a pedophile.”
Now, mind you, I haven’t written anything that was especially salacious on LJ - at least not publicly - but I have talked about my pre-18 sex life (limited though it may have been). I propose that this in so far as that is a discussion of illegal sex, it could very well result in my five years of writing - most of which is not about sex - being deleted.
Yes, yes, Computer 101 says “back everything up,” but one of the understanding of having a LiveJournal was that they wouldn’t, you know, wipe everything out. Maybe that was a false assumption on my part. Indeed, it seems pretty clear that that was a false assumption.
So, I will spend the next couple of days backing everything I have on LJ up and moving it someplace secure. I advise you all to do the same if you have an LJ and your entries are of any value to you.
