The news flash about the dog food recall put me in a cold sweat.
I jumped and ran to the computer. We just started feeding our dog wet food like two weeks ago. Luckily, we started feeding him Pedigree - by accident. It’s what the bodega had. But what if they had something else and we killed our dog? This was one of the only brands not to be affected by the recall.
I have a routine now with Chimi. I come home, we go for a walk. TURDles and tinky and home we go. I make him dinner and do a little dance with a little song: “KIBBLES!!! O MY GOSH ITS KIBBLES TIME” And of course there are variations to it. But, what if I had been feeding him kidney failure instead?
All day Wednesday I researched what is in dog food. One site said euthanized dogs, cats and other various animals. And all their chemicals. Even if that’s not true- whatever is in there is worse than what they feed you at Taco Bell, making it suddenly evident that I could not do the kibbles dance for… kibbles.
I read that dogs develop half of their health problems because of hormones and chemicals in the food. Between the recall and the research - I don’t give a shit how expensive / how “healthy” / how delicious it is - my dog isn’t eating dog food anymore. And then came the recipe hunt for “Home-made dog food.”
I just can’t get it out of my head that I could have unknowingly killed my dog. He’s the sweetest dog I have ever had in my life. He’s just a cuddly mush who covers our living room in dirty socks he steals from the laundry basket - which he also sleeps in when we’re not home. He’s not even completely out of the puppy stage yet. I can’t imagine coming home and him not being there.

My recipe:
1 can Corn
1 can Peas and Carrots
1 box of minute rice
2 boiled chicken pcs
2 hard boiled egg whites (added protein)
4 tsps olive oil (keeps his coat shiny)
couple shakes of garlic powder (fights fleas)
Mince egg whites and chicken; put all ingredients in a large bowl and mix.
I froze half of mine for the later part of the week so it doesn’t go bad. Whole recipe should feed him for about a week.
