I’ve been asked several times whether I would launch a forum to go along with the regular site here at The Dead End, and at first it was an easy answer: no.

After lurking around the corner of the intarweb where most of the personal sites call home, I see that a big lot of them have some kind of forum addition.

Good lord, do forums suck.

Don’t get me wrong. I am involved in at least three different forums, but the one I was once heavily active in is barely trotting along now. I go there once a week and today, only one post had been updated.

Another forum is somewhat active, but 99% of the commentary posted is quick one or two word posts that constantly stray from the original post. Sometimes personal arguments are aired in the public forum and things get real ugly because none of the mods do anything about it.

A forum I recently joined is pretty cool, but I don’t go there enough to truly enjoy it. And there seems to be some really cool people there, too. Reminds me of another forum I used to be on….

But most forums just plain suck unless you’re a regular, and even then a week’s worth of nothingness and even the loyals revolt. That’s just what I noticed, anyway.

What do you think about forums? Post your thoughts; I’d like to know.

  1. If you have a comments section, why would you need a forum?

  2. You know..you’ve got a point. I paid for and run acidmb but hardly ever go there to update. lol

  3. Well you know there’s an uber cool forum here here!!!

I like forums, however they need management, encouragement and coercion. None of which I have the time for. I am a member of a few and when run well they can be interesting, and generate more debate than say a blog can.

I think though that in an ideal world a forum should be able to run itself, but unfortunately the interweb is too vast, and rampant idiocy arrives. This is also one of the beauties of the interweb, but if forum world it’s a downside.
