What a great way to start off the 35th year of my miserable life, watching my clothing spin ’round and ’round, the soap suds dancing with my shirts.

It’s about 1am, when I get a text from my friend about this girl Jayme I know. Well, knew.

She died Sunday night.

The texts came in, other friends letting me know what happened, knowing how I felt when my friend Whitney was killed in a car accident over two weeks ago. But this time, it was different.

I was happy for her.

Jaymee was a nurse, and she was in Galveston, Texas, visiting family when Hurricane Ike hit. She was tending to a family who lost their home, lost her footings and was trapped. For twelve hours she was waiting for help, and in that time apparently took in some of the stagnant water.

Bacterial Meningitis, I believe, is what she had. It tore her apart, and for three weeks she was in the hospital suffering. Updates from friends came in, suffering two cardiac arrests, until finally her pain ended Sunday night.

She did what she felt was right, she tried to help others, and that will be how I always remember her.

  1. I’m so sorry, John. I’ll be around if you want to talk or something.

    :hugs:

  2. Thinking of you on your birthday. Sorry to hear of your loss.

  3. I’m so sorry about your friend. It does sound like you have a very healthy outlook on it though. When you deal with something as horrible as what she had, I think you’re right – she’s in a better place now.

  4. I’m sorry for your loss…she sounds like she’s in a much better place now, having helped people tirelessly during her time on earth.

    Happy Birthday.

  5. …and, though it is a sad loss, she should be remembered for helping others. Warm thoughts to you and her loved ones.

  6. I’m so sorry for your loss.
It wasn’t the same Whitney that used to comment here, was it?

  7. I’m sorry to hear, but from what you said, I believe she’s in a better place now, and she died a hero.

  8. I’m so sorry for your loss.
It wasn’t the same Whitney that used to comment here, was it?
    ____

No no no…. Whitters is still here. I’d be much more crushed if she were to pass, though.

  9. Sorry that your friend passed away, but I understand your sentiment here. Meningitis is a nightmare. That poor lady.

In unrelated news, laundry is, indeed, no way to spend a birthday – though I always think of good story ideas while watching it spin. No idea why.

  10. i find there something theraputic in laundry: the idea you can put a filthy thing into a machine and it comes out clean and dry. if only you could do the same with people.

for your friend, she died heroically, doing something for someone else that not many people even think of doing. granted her death had to be awful, the sentiment is beautiful.

  11. I’m sorry for your loss :( At least she’s not in pain any longer, and in a better place I’m sure.

    Hang in there.

  12. Ouch, I’m sorry to hear about your friend. I’m sure she’s looking over you and others she has touched over the years. Not that many people can do what she did.
