I don't live too far from where it happened, and I couldn't believe that something like this could occur. No one's life is worth anything at Walmart, and the fact that so many people just continued to shop as if nothing happened disgusted me thoroughly. It shows exactly what kind of mindset the American people have...

That is awful, I cried when I read that. I loathe Wal-mart with a passion, and this does not help my feelings towards it. I guess it wasn't the corporation's fault, but then again the people who trampled that guy were attracted to the store for one reason or another. It's absolutely disgusting, both humanity and wal-mart.
I do my shopping on Monday or Tuesday mornings. Wal-mart is open 24 hours during holiday season anyway, why don't people just go at 4 AM? Oh yeah, people are cheap, lazy morons, that's why.

The bystander effect is truly horrible. I've heard of several incidents like the one you wrote about where there were many people who could have helped and nobody did anything.

And the shopping hysteria is fucking crazy.

Yeah, this is a somewhat baffling situation. I have a hard time imagining a situation where getting a knick-knack for Aunt Petunia would overwhelm my senses to the point that I didn't realize I was stepping on a human being.

Of course, once you have 400 people behind you pushing, it is a little hard to stop and help somebody. There is some level of crowd control necessary at this sort of event and, clearly, Walmart wasn't prepared.
