I never thought I would be writing this, but in the last month I have gone absolutely nuts for the band Ween.
I mostly remembered them from “Push Th’ Little Daisies,” a painful song from the early 90’s. Little did I know that they have an incredible range of songs - from disco, to country, to Tom Waits style to blue eyed soul, to pretty much everything in popular American music.
They manage to balance good attempts at humor, with lame attempts at humor, with songs that make no attempt to be funny at all.
Best of all, their album Chocolate and Cheese has a cover that feature prominent breasts. I have tried to discover who their cover model was with absolutely no success. I would appreciate some help here.
Anyhow, the thing that made me look into Ween was that I noticed a lot of people were absolutely nuts about the band on a cult level. This made me think that there must be something to them.
For whatever reason, cult bands often appeal to me on some level. I believe if a band can inspire fanatacism over a decade, it is not because of clever marketing. No, marketing will not help make Jessica Simpson popular five years from now - she will have faded from sight, her most ardant fans having moved on to other things like prostitution and drug addiction.
Ween, on the other hand, will have a steady and ardent fan base. People who absolutely lovee their music.
Anyhow, I recomend looking at this archive of live Ween songs. Really, you can’t go wrong with nearly any of them, but I would recomend looking for “Voodoo Lady,” “Mutilated Lips” or Take me Away - or my current favorite What Deaner Was Talking About. You could also try their awesome cover of Hot For Teacher.
