Before I started writing at TheDeadEnd.net, I thought I had encountered it all in regards to spam. Then I made my first post using MovableType.
I love the feature on MovableType that allows all comments people make on your entries to be immediatly sent to your e-mail. Since I can’t check TheDeadEnd.net from everywhere, this allows me to satisfy my vain need to know that people are reading my updates.
For the first two weeks or so after I started writing, everything was cool. Then, one day, it happened. I got a comment telling me about Texas Hold-Em, which is apparently some sort of thing where you hold down a tiny cam-girl and refinance her house against her will. I may be confused because I got about ten different spam comments that very day.
Now, John hadn’t really prepared me for this situation, but I am the sort of person who isn’t afraid to go off on my own and mess things up. I noticed that MT had a de-spaming feature and, after some trial and error, figured out how to use it.
I thought I would be annoyed at the spam, but now I kind of relish it - relish it almost more than real comments. I love using the de-spaming tool. I love adding sites about “rape stories” or “professional sports betting” to the ban list. I love going back to look at the comments for my entries and seeing them gloriously spam free.
In a way, this is like how I am in relationships. I like being with somebody who has a ton of major issues so that I can feel that sense of immense satisfaction when one of the issues is cleared up. I admit, this is, in itself, something of a sickness.
That’s really all I have to say.
