Whenever a film become a cult film I am always behind the times. In the cases of some cult films, like, say, The Big Lebowski, I was just a fan of the movie and suddenly it was a cult flick. In other cases, like Napoleon Dynamite, I never saw the movie and suddenly it became a cult hit. My point is, I didn’t recognize that either of these films was becoming a cult film and, thus, was unable to parlay their cult success into any improvement for my own “cool quotient.” Thus, I have decided to get in on the ground floor of a new cult film, and I’ll do this by making a specific film a cult film starting now.
I am going to state right here and now that Hulk as directed by Ang Lee deserves cult status.
First, it was referenced on an episode of Robot Chicken tonight, which means that, like Showgiwls, it is starting to become something of a cultural milestone.
Second, it was trashed and flopped when it came out.
Third, it is actually pretty damn good. No, seriously. Maybe my favorite personal Marvel comics movie. I love how Ang Lee uses frames within frames to give a comic book visual sense to the film. There is this one section where he shows all kinds of reaction shots simultaneously which is just awesome.
Fourth, it has Nick Nolte in it, looking like he did in his famous mug shot. That right there is pure unadulterated movie going joy. I nearly cried with bliss when he first appeared on screen.
Fifth, though she does not reveal her breasts in the movie, Jennifer Connelly is in the film, which means that, behind her clothes, her breasts are in it, too. For a time, she had the finest chest in Hollywood. I don’t know if she still has the title now, but I like to imagine. I mean, really like to imagine.
Sixth, almost nobody has seen it, which means if you act all high and mighty like you saw it and it was good and the people who thought it sucked were idiots, it gives you the chance to seem more cool than you actually are.
Finally, the Hulk as a character is just way cool. I mean, he is big and green and gets larger when he gets angry. Like my genitals.
