Personal issues and beliefs aside I really have no issues with religion (in a general sense). If someone finds a belief system that suits them and makes them happy then I’m happy for them, especially if it’s something they believe themselves instead of just blindly following what someone else is telling them to believe. What I do have issue with is how intolerant to other beliefs some people can be.

This isn’t anything new, I know. Religious issues have been going on since the birth of religion, and many lives have been lost because of it. This idea, frankly, is sickening to me. Why can’t people just accept that different does not equal wrong? Different does not mean that whole groups of people and their cultures should die.

Think of how much more we’d know of the Mayan people if the Catholic invaders hadn’t decided they were basically people of the devil and tried their best to destroy everything they could of their culture. Same goes for the Celts and countless others.

Different parts of Christianity can’t even get along – look at the battles in Ireland between Protestants and Catholics. Then there’s Christians vs. Muslims, everyone vs. Jews… where does the madness stop? It doesn’t… and it makes the idea that our culture is ‘civilized’ a joke. Really, if people were all that civilized wouldn’t they be more accepting?

In the US, where we’re supposed to have religious freedom, I shouldn’t feel the need to hide that I’m not Christian. I shouldn’t feel the need to keep my views to myself to try to not step on the toes of others when they tend to not have the same respect in return. I don’t mind discussing my beliefs with others and hearing theirs in return when it’s a discussion and no one is saying that their way is the only way, that everyone else is wrong. Outside of that atmosphere I tend to keep my opinions to myself – for the most part anyway – and things go well as I just block out negativity from sources that just don’t matter.

Until, that is, it’s literally brought to my door. I can’t stand to have someone knocking on my door to see if I’ve “found the way” and telling me that I need to “ask Jesus for forgiveness” – what gives anyone the right to tell me what I need and needn’t do? If don’t shove my beliefs down your throat, don’t shove yours down mine.

Don’t tell me I’m going to burn for eternity in a place I don’t even believe in just because my beliefs are different than yours. Believing differently than you doesn’t mean that I’m not a good person, and believing in you certainly doesn’t mean that you’re a better human being than I am. No one should ever have that pushed onto them.

This little rant came from Julie telling me about the relentless door pounding she endured from a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses the other morning, all hell-bent on saving her soul. We ranted for a bit and I shared my ‘secret’ of getting them to leave me alone. Two little words send them running, even if only because it’s so misunderstood. “I’m Pagan.”

In my case it’s true, but they don’t have to know whether or not it is with you.

  1. Honestly, I don’t understand why people believe they have to FORCE you to join their faith.

I, personally, have no religion. I am Roman Catholic, but I don’t go to church or do anything that would make one think I am religious. I blame that on my father passing.

Recently, though, several things in my life have shown me that maybe I should reconsider. A real good friend and I have discussed this, and I feel comfortable talking about my faith, or lack thereof, with them. Because of this, I may consider my views on religion, maybe even go back to church.

    We’ll see.

  2. Normally when the religious Zealots here are told someone is a Pagan, they automatically assume you’re a satanist. Gotta love ignorance!

  3. i promise, i wont sell you.

    MARY!!!! =)

    MARY!!!! =)
!! LOL Mary’s no pimp.

Or can you just not sell what’s given away for free?

  6.
I, personally, have no religion. I am Roman Catholic, but I don’t go to church or do anything that would make one think I am religious.
This confuses me. If you’re Roman Catholic you have a religion, even if you don’t follow it. =P

Yeah lol Same here pretty much. That’s why they run so fast haha

    Thank you!!!

I’m cool, I inspired a TDE post. Really though, why do people feel that believing what they believe is not enough and feel the need to vomit their faith on others? I am tolerant of people’s religion and I just don’t give a rat’s ass what people believe as long as they are good people and treat others with respect. What I can’t stand are those obnoxious folks who think it is their duty to tell people what religion is right and who can’t take “fuck off” as an answer. Really, you ring my doorbell. I don’t answer. Let that be the end. No, you have to ring again, and then knock a few more times? Are you that dense? Do you not get it? Do I need to shoot you in the head so you finally leave me alone?

That’s why I told you to open the door and at least tell them to leave you alone. If you don’t then they’re going to keep coming because ‘spreading the glory’ is that important to them – maybe you were sleeping and didn’t hear, in another room and didn’t hear, just couldn’t come to the door… ect – because ignoring the door isn’t a no. Open the door, tell them to fuck off, and if they come back tell them that it’s harassment and you’ll make sure to report them if it keeps up. Or tell them you’re Pagan and see how fast they clear your doorstep :P

  9. When I was in high school I made the mistake of allowing my [then] religious beliefs known. I had to go through a lot of hell from intolerant bigots and hypocrites. I got shot at, my sites hacked, jumped, belongings tagged – just a lot of hell.

I’ve come to realize that I’m not really a believer in anything and I am truly agnostic now, but even then that tends to incite many religious fanatics as well since they believe you’re in danger of loosing your soul or something. I’ve found that just ignoring them when they knock on the door, speaking another language (usually Japanese unless they are so clearly white that I know they won’t know Spanish), or walking outside and letting the dog loose tends to get rid of them fairly quickly. ;)

I wouldn’t recommend throwing the fact that you’re pagan, whether as a joke or real, in their face to be very smart. Yeah, the way they scramble to their car is reminiscent of how people always hurried to get off the Munster’s property, but in the long run it can come back to haunt you in the form of burning crosses on your lawn, broken windows, and even more persistent visitors. Eventually they’ll mention your response to the wrong people or they could be the wrong people. Voice of experiance here.

  10. Yeah I completely agree with everything you just said! I come from a traditional african-american christian family who believe in nothing but the lord, hell, and heaven…but personally I don’t feel that way. Ya know as a child I didn’t know any better, but now that I’m getting older I’m starting to see things based on my own knowledge and feelings. I believe in a “God”..but not the way my family does. Like I think everyone should just have their own perosnal God…not put a face on him..or “image”.but just a spirutal guide who you believe in heart/mind/soul is there to help you when in need. but i don’t believe in heaven/hell..I think when you’re dead…you’re dead that’s it you dont “go” anywhere lol…but..yeah, that’s just how I feel. but I dont think anyone who is of different religion than you should be forcing theirs down your throat. Believe in what you want to! & as long as you’re no personal ha to me…you’re okay in my book ;)

  11. “& as long as you’re no personal ha to me…you’re okay in my book ;)”
that was supposed to be harm lol..sorry.
