Debt

I’m watching TV this morning and the news anchors are talking about how the American government are days away from potentially defaulting on their loans. They ask the weather guy his thoughts, and he shrugs saying he doesn’t really know what debt is because he doesn’t have any.

The female news anchor says, “Everyone should have a little debt.”

Really? Everyone should have debt? That’s the mentality that brought our global economy down to it’s knees in the past four years. The same chaotic thinking that not having money is okay to buy things we’ve been living through since the 1980s.

I was talking with a friend last night about this, coincidentally. I don’t know what debt it. I’ve never had a credit card. I’ve never made a loan. My mindset is if I don’t have the money, I can’t afford it. I have a little egg in case something happens, but I don’t live with the mindset that I need a lot.

What would happen if the government had this mentality? We’re so willing to spend money on new welfare programs and healthcare plans but where is the money for it? Sign another bill, pass another law, and put it on the tab? And then turn around and point fingers at the taxpayers, showing the reasoning behind the economic collapse is their irresponsibility in their own finances and sliding a big bag of money to the banks?

President Obama called for change. I think he meant pocket change.
